Kippi Waters to Speak at National Grant Maker's Conference

Make it stand out

Whatever it is, the way you tell your story online can make all the difference.

Kippi Waters, founding director of Peninsula Homecare Cooperative, will be speaking at the Asset Fund Network’s conference in New Orleans.  Kippi will be presenting the power of worker-ownership as a solution to the challenges facing the direct care workforce.  The end-result of this presentation will be to inspire philanthropists and funders to invest in the development and expansion of the home care cooperative sector.   Read more about the conference here: https://assetfunders.org/afn-national-grantmaker-conference/

Safety in the Kitchen – The DANGER ZONE

Certain foods, called ‘potentially hazardous foods’, are more likely to cause foodborne illness if stored at improper temperatures. These foods must be kept cold at 41 °F (or below), or hot at 135 °F (or above) to ensure safety. Foods stored between 41 °F and 135 °F are in the DANGER ZONE and are unsafe to serve to your clients. Common ‘potentially hazardous foods’ include meat, poultry, eggs, fish, cooked starches, cooked vegetables, sprouts, cut melons, cut tomatoes, and cut leafy greens.

Seniors… Prepare Now for a Safe Winter

These beautiful late autumn days are a reminder that it’s time to prepare for winter days ahead – including possible storms and power outages.  Here is a brief list of actions we can take to ensure our comfort and safety this winter.

  • Stay Informed - There are many ways to stay abreast of emergency conditions when they occur in our community. Sign up for NIXLE emergency alerts on your cell phone by texting your ZIP code to 888777.  Tune to local radio KPTZ - 91.9 FM for vital information from the Jefferson County Emergency Operations Center.

  • Stay Healthy - Refill medical prescriptions and make sure you have at least a 2-week supply of medicine and medical supplies on hand.

  • Prepare for Power Outages - make sure your cellphones and other important electrical devices are fully charged. Keep flashlights within reach near your bed and other common living spaces. Keep fresh batteries in a familiar place. If you use oxygen, talk to your oxygen supply company about back-up emergency supplies that do not require electricity such as oxygen tanks and cylinders. Make sure you know how to set up and use your back up emergency oxygen supply.

  • Stay Warm - Keep spare blankets and warm clothing easily accessible – include mittens, scarves, and hats.

  • Keep Nourished - Make sure your kitchen is stocked with nonperishable food and bottled water.

  • Stay Safe - Check that smoke detectors and carbon monoxide detectors have fresh batteries and are working properly.

  • Pets are People Too – Maintain an emergency supply of pet food and medications.

  • Stay Connected – During an emergency, reach out to friends and family for comfort and the reassurance that you are not alone.

In our windy, seaside community, it's safe to assume that the lights will go out this winter. Plan ahead. Be prepared!
